The Most Popular Countertop Options For Los Angeles Homeowners

Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are actually an engineered stone countertop, they generally do not come from a solid slab like Granite.  They are man made surfaces that are manufactured from chunks of quartz crystal stone that are then mixed with special resins and coloring to make a variety of appealing patterns. While quartz is available in a natural stone slab form most kitchen and bath suppliers are showing off manufactured quartz in their showrooms.  According to the NKBA (national kitchen and bath association) quartz countertops are now the most popular material for countertops, even more popular than granite.

There are advantages to using Quartz over granite, including that it’s impervious to stains and it does not need to be sealed. It’s also a more durable material and is more scratch and chip resistant.  If you’re after a more environmentally friendly choice for your new countertops Quartz wins again because it’s usually made from waste stone and doesn’t require intensive mining of slabs or shipping around the globe.

Quartz countertops are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns and manufacturers have gotten much better at making their Quartz products look and resemble real, natural stone.  We can install Quartz countertops from some of the nations leading manufacturers such as:  Zodiaq, Silestone, Cambria, and Caesarstone.

Granite Countertops

Granite is a natural stone that must be mined or quarried from large igneous stone deposits that are found in various parts of the world.  Granite begins it’s life as molten magma that flows into other rock structures and slowly cools.  It’s then quarried and processed for use as a countertop.  Granite is naturally very rough and textured after it’s been mined so the granite you commonly see used for countertops has been ground and polished using special processes so it appears to have a smooth surface with a beautiful natural sheen.

Because granite slabs are comprised of different minerals it can give each countertop slab a very unique and attractive appearance. For example, granite high in Mica will produce a brown or black veining to the pattern, if it’s high in a mineral called feldspar the granite will have red or pink hues.  If the granite is high in quartz it can give light pink, white or even black hues to the stone.

These variations are what make granite countertops so popular because each slab of granite has it’s own character.  If you are replacing multiple countertops in your home with granite it’s important that are all mined from the same quarry so you get some consistency in the appearance.

One downside to granite countertops is their high maintenance requirements, they need to be kept clean.  Because they are a naturally porous material they are also susceptible to stains if they aren’t sealed properly.
